When many women and men in New Jersey think of liposuction, the traditional technique, also called tumescent liposuction, comes to mind. This technique originally was developed over 30 years ago and remains a popular choice for removing diet-resistant pockets of fat. Using this method, Dr. Sorokin manually moves the liposuction instrument (called a "cannula") back and forth underneath the skin to break up and remove unwanted fat deposits.

Traditional Lipo – Still Amazing After All These Years
The traditional technique is also known as suction-assisted liposuction (SAL). After making tiny incisions near the treatment area, Dr. Sorokin inserts the cannula to break up and vacuum out subdermal fatty tissue. The proper amount of fat to be removed for each liposuction patient is determined by massaging the skin and squeezing the tissue during the procedure. Once the fat has been removed, incisions are stitched closed and a compression dressing is applied to minimize swelling. Depending on the area treated and amount of fat removed, a patient may need to wear a support garment for several weeks to help protect and shape the treated area.
The Benefits of Traditional Liposuction
Dr. Sorokin's liposuction patients choose the traditional method for a number of reasons, including to:
- Benefit from a time-tested method to safely remove excess fat deposits
- Reduce fat tissue in non-fibrous areas such as the abdomen, hips, and thighs
- Create a more attractive look and increase comfort in clothing
- Enhance plastic surgery results when combined with other procedures such as a tummy tuck or breast reduction
